Shades of Violette è un progetto musicale nato a Washington D.C., che si muove tra le atmosfere sognanti dello shoegaze, le sfumature dell’alt-rock e un immaginario sonoro intimo e rarefatto.
A far parte del progetto sono Melanie Ann, voce ed autrice dei testi, assieme a Jeremy (proveniente dal progetto musicale Postlooperish), che si occupa della parte strumentale. La loro identità ha iniziato a prendere forma nel 2023 con un primo EP introduttivo, che ha segnato l’inizio di una visione artistica e musicale unica e distintiva. Di recente è uscito il loro ultimo album, Spiritsense, che esplora tematiche spirituali ed umane attraverso suoni eterei ed avvolgenti.
In questa intervista, Melanie ci racconta la genesi di Spiritsense, condividendo con noi le sue ispirazioni, il processo creativo e cosa significa, oggi, fare musica in modo autentico. Prima però una panoramica sulla loro discografia.
Shades of Violette: la discografia e l’ultimo album Spiritsense
Gli Shades of Violette pubblicano il loro primo album omonimo nel febbraio 2024. Viene subito accolto dal pubblico unanime che lo descrive come “evocativo, dai testi poetici e coinvolgenti”. Le voci hanno un sapore cinematografico e creano un parallelismo onirico che emerge dalle composizioni.
Sul profilo Bandcamp (link a fondo pagina) l’album riceve ottimi apprezzamenti: in particolare un utente lo definisce “dalla musica ipnotica, ma allo stesso tempo familiare e unica”, mettendo in evidenza la capacità di fondere elementi del passato con innovazione. Questo rende l’intero lavoro sicuramente molto affascinante.
Nel frattempo, gli Shades of Violette pubblicano il singolo Tropics (agosto 2024) che include anche il brano Hush e si presenta come un vero e proprio ponte tra i due album.
Come appena anticipato, l’ultimo lavoro targato Shades of Violette, Spiritsense (uscito lo scorso 28 marzo), è incentrato appieno sulle sonorità eteree e dilatate dello shoegaze, lasciandosi attraversare da riverberi caratteristici e da atmosfere “ovattate” tipiche del genere.
Uno degli aspetti che colpisce particolarmente dell’album è infatti la scelta dei suoni. Brani come Sweet Dreams e Charmed sono caratterizzati da chitarre sognanti e vaporose che creano un’atmosfera eterea che cattura l’ascoltatore fin dal primo ascolto. Si riesce così a mescolare la delicatezza tipica del genere shoegaze con una potenza più evocativa che richiama alla mente alcuni progetti grunge, o del mondo alternative rock degli anni ’90: basti pensare a band come i Garbage (richiamati sia nella timbrica vocale di Melanie, sia nelle chitarre più distorte di alcuni brani come Grounded).

Ciao Melanie! Siamo felici di poter parlare con te qui su BM. Volevo iniziare chiedendoti come è nato il progetto Shades of Violette. Qual era l’idea iniziale, e come si è evoluta questa nel tempo fino a diventare ciò che è oggi?
Shades of Violette (SoV) è un progetto composto da me e dal mio amico Jeremy (dei Postlooperish). Ci siamo conosciuti online, ma siamo subito diventati amici non appena ci siamo resi conto di condividere una forte passione per la musica.
In realtà, tutto è cominciato da una lettura delle carte angeliche che feci ad inizio del 2023. Quella lettura mi aveva fatto chiaramente capire che dovevo iniziare a cantare (la cosa inizialmente mi aveva un po’ sorpresa, in quanto avevo sempre pensato di non esserne capace). Qualche tempo dopo, scaricai un’app di karaoke sul telefono e iniziai a cantare per divertimento alcune delle mie canzoni preferite. Alcune di queste in realtà le ritenevo venute sorprendentemente bene, così le condivisi con Jeremy.
Fu proprio lui a chiedermi di provare a cantare nei cori per alcuni suoi brani, e visto che gli piaceva il risultato, mi propose subito di creare delle strumentali su cui potessi cantare in esclusiva, giusto per esperimento.

Le prime tre canzoni – A Matter of Time, Fields of Blue e Sunsetter– sono state il punto di partenza dei SoV, pubblicate su Bandcamp a maggio 2023. Abbiamo visto che sono state subito ben accolte, così nell’autunno 2023 abbiamo deciso di prenderci più sul serio e lavorare a un album completo. Ci abbiamo messo circa quattro mesi per creare il nostro primo disco, omonimo, pubblicato a febbraio 2024. Qualche mese dopo, ad agosto, è uscito il singolo Tropics, con un sound leggermente diverso, più etereo. Anche stavolta, la risposta del pubblico ci ha sorpresi in positivo. Per mantenere questo slancio, nell’autunno 2024 ci siamo messi di nuovo al lavoro sul nostro secondo album, Spiritsense, pubblicato a marzo di quest’anno.
Durante questo viaggio con SoV, stiamo imparando sempre cose nuove. Come cantante emergente e nuova nel mondo musicale, anche dal punto di vista creativo, ho dovuto superare la convinzione limitante di non poter essere una cantante. All’inizio mancava fiducia in me stessa: ho provato quella che chiamano “sindrome dell’impostore”. Ho dovuto anche imparare a usare software e attrezzature musicali. Ma col tempo credo di aver sviluppato più sicurezza e forza anche a livello vocale, e penso che questo si senta nei brani più recenti. Jeremy, anche se è un musicista esperto, continua a perfezionare il nostro suono, cercando modi sempre migliori per mixare e masterizzare. Siamo dei veri autodidatti: impariamo costantemente, e la nostra musica evolve in modo molto naturale.
Il vostro nuovo album è dedicato agli Angeli che ti supportano e ti guidano nel canto e nella creazione musicale. Puoi raccontarmi come è nato questo legame con loro e se percepisci la loro presenza durante il processo creativo?
Ripensando ad alcuni segni ed esperienze che ho vissuto, credo che gli angeli siano sempre stati con me, ma non ne ero pienamente consapevole fino all’età più adulta, quando ho iniziato a vedere numeri ripetuti, schemi e a vivere quelle che oggi chiamo “sincronicità”.

Ora, prima di scrivere o cantare, chiedo agli angeli di aiutarmi ad entrare in sintonia con il flusso delle informazioni universali, in base all’intenzione che ho per quella canzone. E loro mi rispondono sempre: i testi e il canto sembra che mi arrivino in modo rapido e naturale. Forse è più una sensazione profonda, un sapere intimo che loro sono presenti.
È per questo che abbiamo chiamato Spiritsense sia la prima canzone che l’intero album, ed è anche il motivo per cui ho voluto dedicarlo a loro.

La copertina dell’album presenta una falena, che per te deve avere un significato speciale.. ha a che fare con queste presenze che percepisci?
Sono anche una fotografa, quindi tutte le copertine dei nostri album sono tratte da foto che ho scattato io. Quella di Spiritsense, con una falena su un davanzale, è una foto che ho fatto qualche anno fa, ed ho sentito subito che rispecchiava l’essenza dell’album.

La musica spesso diventa una salvezza durante i momenti difficili. Che ruolo ha avuto la musica nel tuo percorso di guarigione emotiva e crescita personale? E come speri che le tue canzoni possano aiutare chi sta affrontando periodi difficili?
Sono sempre stata una grande appassionata di musica, grazie a mio padre, che la teneva sempre in sottofondo durante tutta la mia infanzia, ma anche successivamente. Non ho dubbi che la musica sia stata una salvezza durante l’adolescenza e in altri momenti più difficili della mia vita, perché ci connette con il nostro lato emotivo e ci aiuta a percepire bene le emozioni. Secondo me la musica va a creare proprio uno spazio nel nostro cuore e ci riporta ai ricordi di quei momenti in cui è stata significativa per noi, sia nelle giornate migliori che in quelle più negative. Ciò che accade è che ci identifichiamo nei testi, o semplicemente il modo in cui certe note vengono suonate riesce a evocarci emozioni diverse. Perciò la musica è uno strumento potente, e come tale può essere curativa se ci permettiamo di aprirci e di viverla appieno.
Da quando ho iniziato con SoV, ho avuto la grande opportunità di scrivere i miei testi, tutti tratti dalle mie esperienze personali, pensieri, ricordi e traumi. Questo mi ha aiutata a elaborare tutti i pensieri e le emozioni, in maniera curativa. A volte è accaduto che nemmeno sapevo cosa avrei dovuto scrivere, ma poi il testo è venuto fuori senza sforzo (per esempio nella la nostra nuova canzone, Poor Leonard). Penso che sia i miei sentimenti che i miei traumi stavano solo aspettando l’occasione giusta per essere espressi.
Spero che le nostre canzoni possano raggiungere chi ne ha bisogno, offrendo rassicurazione e messaggi di speranza.

Alcuni brani di Spiritsense evocano un’atmosfera grunge, con chitarre che sembrano essere avvolte nella nebbia ma risultano comunque molto potenti. Nonostante queste influenze grunge, ci sono altri artisti che hanno influenzato il tuo suono in generale, e come hanno plasmato la tua musica?
Le nostre influenze sono varie, ma sono radicate nella musica degli anni ’80 e ’90, inclusi appunto il grunge, l’alternative rock, lo shoegaze e il post-punk. Come hai notato, ci sono elementi di tutti questi stili nel nostro suono, ad esempio prendiamo spunto da: Pixies, Dinosaur Jr., Smashing Pumpkins, Slowdive e Deftones. Probabilmente, una delle mie principali influenze è stata Film School (la mia band preferita!!). Altri gruppi che hanno ispirato la nostra musica e che voglio menzionare sono A Shoreline Dream, Tropic of Cancer e True Widow (noti per i suoni espansivi delle loro chitarre e per il loro stile “doom rock”, nda).
Quando un brano mi ispira, lo condivido con Jeremy e parliamo degli elementi della canzone che ci piacciono. Poi lui questi elementi li prende e li incorpora in qualche modo nelle creazioni di SoV.

Melanie, hai una canzone preferita in Spiritsense, o una che senti particolarmente speciale tra quelle dell’album?
Beh…adoro tutte le canzoni dell’album per motivi diversi, ognuna ha un posto speciale nel mio cuore! Tuttavia, la canzone a cui continuo a tornare è Essence. Rappresenta perfettamente lo spirito di SoV. Le sue parole sono significative per me perché riflettono le mie convinzioni riguardo alla situazione attuale nel mondo: offrono rassicurazione in mezzo al caos. La nostra canzone Spiritsense, è speciale per me perché faccio un tributo ai miei angeli, che mi hanno guidata come ti dicevo prima. Bursting Sky è così divertente e giocosa. E Afterlife è probabilmente la nostra canzone più riuscita, la più bella, ed è dedicata ai nostri cari che non sono più qui, ma allo stesso tempo sono sempre con noi.
C’è un messaggio particolare che speri gli ascoltatori possano trarre da questo album?
Sento il bisogno di portare positività e guarigione agli altri. La mia intenzione è che tutte le nostre canzoni raggiungano le persone che ne hanno bisogno e che riescano a farle sentire sollevate. Spero che possano relazionarsi con i miei messaggi, e che questo possa aiutarli a sapere che non sono soli, o magari anche aiutarli a considerare diverse prospettive e possibilità.
Infine, quali sono i tuoi prossimi progetti? Ci sono sogni od obiettivi che vuoi perseguire?
Attualmente sto lavorando su alcuni programmi radio e interviste per il lancio di Spiritsense. Continueremo anche a registrare e cantare nuove canzoni di SoV. Esprimerci e creare ci dà grande gioia. Abbiamo già alcune nuove canzoni in fase di creazione: vogliamo rilasciare un singolo o un EP a fine estate, oltre ad iniziare il lavoro per il prossimo album questo autunno.

Melanie, Shades of Violette – Interview (English Version)
Hi Melanie! It’s a pleasure to welcome you to Brainstorming Magazine and to dive into the world of Shades of Violette with you. How did the project come to life? What was the initial idea, and how has it evolved over time into what it is today?
Shades of Violette (SoV) consists of myself and my friend Jeremy (of Postlooperish). We first met online and became fast friends when we realized that we shared a lot in common with our love of music. It actually started with an angel card reading that I did at the beginning of 2023. The reading made it abundantly clear that I needed to start singing, which surprised me because I always felt that I couldn’t sing. Shortly after, I got a karaoke app on my phone and started to sing for fun to many of my favorite songs. Some of those songs turned out surprisingly well, so I shared them with Jeremy, who in turn asked if I would try singing some backup vocals for his own songs. He liked what he heard and suggested that he make some instrumental songs for me to sing exclusively on as an experiment.
Those first three songs, A Matter of Time, Fields of Blue and Sunsetter were the beginning of SoV, and were released in May of 2023 on Bandcamp. It was well received, so in the Autumn of 2023, we decided to take SoV more seriously and focus on the process of making a full-length album. It took us about four months to make our self-titled album, which was released in February of 2024. A few months later in August of 2024, we released our single Tropics which had a slightly different, more ethereal sound. We were surprised and happy about the positive responses for these releases as well. To keep the momentum going, in the Autumn of 2024, we once again set out to make our second full-length album, Spiritsense which was just released in March of this year.
On this SoV journey, we’ve been learning new knowledge and skills as we go. As a new singer, and also being new to the music world from a musician perspective, I was growing out of my limiting mindset that I could never be a singer. There was some initial lack of confidence on my part, what they call “imposter syndrome”. There was also a learning curve for me, in that I had to learn how to use the music software and equipment. But over time I believe I have developed more confidence and also physical strength in my vocal chords, which is reflected in my more recent tracks. Also, although Jeremy is a seasoned musician, he is always tweaking our sound and coming up with better ways to mix and master our songs. We are true do-it-yourselfers, always learning and expanding on that knowledge and organically evolving in our sound.
Your new album is dedicated to the angels who support and guide you in singing and creating music. Could you tell me how this connection with them began? And how do you feel their presence during the creative process? The album cover also features a butterfly, which seems to carry a special meaning. Does it relate to these presences you perceive?
Looking back at certain signs and experiences I’ve had, I believe the angels have always been around me, but I wasn’t consciously aware until young adulthood when I started seeing repeated numbers and patterns, and experiencing “coincidences”, that I now call synchronous events. I communicate with them by talking with them out loud, as well as through the angel oracle cards, as I mentioned. They send me messages through the card readings, as well as signs and synchronicities that validate my questions and assure me I’m on the right path.
Now, before I write or sing, I ask the angels to help me to receive the universal flow of information from source, with regard to my intentions for the song.They always deliver, as the lyrics and singing seem to flow to me quickly and naturally. It’s more of a deep-seated sense and knowing that they are present. This is why we named the first song as well our album Spiritsense, which is about my angels, and this is why I dedicated the album to them.
I’m a photographer, so all of our album covers are from pictures that I took. The Spiritsense album cover, which is that of a moth on a windowsill, was a picture I took a couple of years ago, and immediately felt that it matched the essence of the album. It symbolizes simplicity and finding beauty in unexpected places. Also butterflies seem to get more attention than moths, so the cover might also represent things that are underappreciated. Because my lyrics contain spiritual messages of love and light, I felt the moth represented the idea of being drawn to the light.
Music often becomes a lifeline during tough times. What role does music play in your own journey of emotional healing and personal growth? And how do you hope your songs can help those going through difficult times?
I have been an avid listener and enthusiast of music for all my life, thanks to my late father, who would always have it playing throughout my childhood and beyond. There’s no question that it became my lifeline during adolescence and those rockier times in my life because music connects us to our emotional side and helps us to feel those emotions. It carves out a space in our hearts, and brings us back to the times when it was most significant in our lives, for better or worse. Many times we can relate to the lyrics, or just the way certain notes are played can evoke different feelings. Therefore it is a powerful tool, and as such can be healing if we allow ourselves to open up and experience and feel it.
Since SoV, I have had the great opportunity to write my own lyrics, all of which come from my personal experiences, thoughts, memories and traumas. Writing lyrics has helped me to process some of these thoughts and emotions in a helpful and healing way. Sometimes I didn’t even know it was something that I needed to write about, but it just flowed out of me effortlessly (an example would be our new song, Poor Leonard). These feelings and traumas seemed like they were just waiting for an opportunity to be expressed. I hope that our songs can reach others who may need reassurance, and uplifting messages.
Some tracks in your album evoke a grunge feel, with guitars wrapped in mist but still very powerful. Despite these grunge influences, are there any other artists in general who have influenced your sound, and how have they shaped your music?
Our influences vary but are firmly rooted in the music of the 80s and 90s, including grunge, alternative rock, shoegaze and postpunk, and there are elements of all of these styles and genres in our music, like The Pixies, Dinosaur Jr., Smashing Pumpkins, Slowdive and the Deftones. One of the biggest influences has been Film School (it’s my favorite band!). Other bands that have inspired our music would include A Shoreline Dream, Tropic of Cancer, and True Widow, among others. When I’m inspired by a song, I will share it with Jeremy and we’ll talk about the elements of the song that we like. Then he will incorporate those elements in any new SoV creations.
Do you have a favorite song on the album, or one that feels particularly special to you?
I love all of the songs on the album for different reasons, as they each have a special place in my heart. However, the song that I keep coming back to is Essence. It captures the spirit of SoV perfectly. Its lyrics are meaningful to me because they represent my beliefs about the current state of affairs in the world while offering assurance amidst the chaos. Our song Spiritsense, that I mentioned earlier, is special to me because I pay tribute to my angels, who have guided me. Bursting Sky is so fun and whimsical. And Afterlife is probably our most well-executed, most beautiful song, which is about how our loved ones who have passed are always with us.
Is there a particular message or feeling you hope listeners take away from this album?
I feel the need to help bring positivity and healing to others. It has been my greatest intent for all of our songs to reach the people that need to hear them and to feel uplifted by them. It’s my hope that they can relate to my messages, and that it might help them to know that they are not alone, or maybe even help them to consider different perspectives and possibilities.

Finally, what are your upcoming projects? Are there new dreams or goals you’re excited to pursue?
I am currently in the midst of working on a few radio shows and interviews for our Spiritsense release. We’re also going to continue to record and sing new SoV songs because it brings us great joy to create and express. There are already a few new songs in the works. We’re planning on releasing a single or EP in the late summer, as well as continuing our tradition of starting on the next full-length album in the fall. Additionally, there have been some inquiries about merch, so we have a few cool ideas up our sleeves…stay tuned!
